Optimising your business: Better People Management Programme

Optimising your business: Better People Management Programme

UPDATED: 15th August 2025

Your employees are your organisation’s most valuable asset, so attracting, developing and retaining top talent is essential. Effective people management is not just about ticking HR boxes, it’s a strategic approach that can transform your workforce and drive business growth.

Recruiting the right people and keeping them can be challenging, especially for SMEs managing budget constraints, increasing competition for skills, and ongoing economic uncertainty.

By investing in in-work support for your managers and leaders, you can reduce pressure, create a happier and more engaged workforce, and position your business as an employer of choice.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what makes effective people management and how NBSL’s Better People Management (BPM) Programme can help businesses across Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland build a skilled, resilient, and motivated team.

The importance of people management

People management, sometimes called human resource management (HRM), is the foundation of a successful business. It covers the full employee lifecycle: recruiting, onboarding, developing, supporting, and retaining.

Effective people management can be broken down into four key components:

1.  Attracting and retaining top talent

People management focuses on identifying, attracting, and hiring the right people for your organisation.

Success here is directly linked to building a strong employer brand, one that helps you stand out in the labour market and compete for talent.

By offering competitive salaries, attractive benefits, and meaningful company perks, people managers can attract and retain skilled employees who will add long-term value.

2. Supporting employee development

Providing regular feedback, setting clear expectations, and communicating openly with employees allows them to focus their efforts and work towards tangible goals.

Providing tailored training and development opportunities for career progression will not only improve productivity and problem-solving skills in your workplace but also raise morale and engagement levels.

3. Managing employee relations

To maintain a harmonious work environment, people managers must ensure to address and resolve conflicts between employees quickly and fairly.

It’s essential to have clear, consistent disciplinary and grievance procedures in place and ensure they are followed in line with current employment legislation.

4. Fostering employee engagement

Engaged employees are more productive, committed, and likely to remain with the business. Recognition and reward, whether financial, public, or through professional development, is a powerful motivator.

Supporting employee wellbeing through wellness programmes or flexible working arrangements can also make a significant difference to retention and workplace culture.

While these are the core elements of people management, they need to be underpinned by clear, well-communicated HR policies. Many SMEs choose to outsource their HR to ensure compliance, streamline processes, and access expert advice when challenges arise.

What issues do SMEs face?

Small and medium-sized enterprises often face unique people management challenges. Limited budgets, restricted resources, lack of HR expertise, and rapid growth can create pressure points such as:

  • Struggling to recruit and retain talent
  • Gaps in leadership capability
  • Ineffective performance management systems
  • Compliance risks
  • Limited opportunities for staff development

The Better People Management Programme has been designed to address these challenges, helping businesses not only keep employees but also help them progress.

What is the Better People Management Programme?

The Better People Management (BPM) Programme is a UK Government-funded initiative, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and delivered by Northumberland Business Services Limited (NBSL).

It is specifically designed to help businesses in Newcastle, North Tyneside, and Northumberland improve their people management strategies and create stronger, more resilient teams.

The programme offers up to 12 hours of fully funded one-to-one consultancy with a specialist HR advisor, as well as access to fully funded workshops covering key people management topics.

The consultancy provides a diagnostic review to identify where your business could improve its people practices and to create a clear plan of action.

How the BPM Programme can support your business

The BPM Programme can provide practical solutions across a wide range of areas, including:

Recruitment and retention

The BPM Programme can help refine your recruitment process to attract the right candidates and support the development of clear employee progression strategies.

These pathways create opportunities for growth while encouraging long-term retention.

Leadership and management

Strong leadership is the foundation of effective people management.

The BPM Programme offers tailored workshops and one-to-one support to help managers develop the confidence and skills to handle HR challenges, support their teams, and drive performance.

Building staff resilience

Resilience is a vital skill for today’s workforce.

Through the BPM Programme, HR specialists can help you foster a culture where employees can adapt to change, manage stress, and recover quickly from setbacks.

This might include providing mental health resources, offering flexible working arrangements, promoting work-life balance, and encouraging open communication.

Neurodiversity

The BPM Programme also supports businesses to better understand and meet the needs of neurodiverse employees.

Training and guidance can help managers adopt inclusive practices, from flexible work arrangements to sensory-friendly workspaces, visual aids, and adapted communication methods, all of which can help neurodiverse employees thrive.

Digital skills, reward, and recognition

The programme can also help improve digital capabilities among managers and teams, and develop reward and recognition frameworks that celebrate employee achievements and encourage ongoing engagement.

Eligibility for the BPM Programme

To be eligible for the BPM Programme, your business must:

  • Be based in Newcastle, North Tyneside, or Northumberland (there is some flexibility for nearby areas such as Durham, Sunderland, South Tyneside, and Gateshead, but numbers are restricted and require funder approval)
  • Have five or more employees
  • Be facing challenges with staff retention and/or progression
  • Be able to demonstrate how the support could safeguard jobs or introduce new processes or technologies

Why participate in the BPM Programme?

The BPM Programme is designed to identify skills-related challenges and address the barriers preventing businesses from progressing their workforce. By taking part, you can:

Adapt to economic shifts and remain competitive

Gain the insight and tools needed to respond effectively to changes in the market, whether that’s shifting demands, economic pressures, or sector-specific challenges.

Improve and streamline your HR processes
